Public Shaming as Discipline is Not Ok

On Friday, May 29, 13-year old Izabel Laxamana committed suicide by jumping off of a bridge in Tacoma, Washington. Days before Laxamana jumped onto Interstate 5, her father, Jeff, reportedly posted a video of young Izabel with short hair in what appears to be a garage. On a video that was re-posted by a third-party to YouTube, Izabel’s father cut his daughter’s hair and told her that it was one of the “consequences of getting messed up.” Many people believe that this middle schooler’s death was caused by her father’s humiliating video. Jeff asks Izabel on the video if whatever she did was “worth it” — but I’d like to ask Jeff Laxamana if publicly shaming his daughter was worth loosing her?
